A practice day, or even more so a residential weekend, is an ideal opportunity to take our sitting experience a little further than the usual daily sitting, to allow our mind-body to settle and regain our sense of direction.
The day programme typically is around three and a half hours of zazen spread through the day, interspersed with some discussion around a topic that is useful in the actual practice of our life; tea and lunch breaks. Over a weekend, from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon, there may be a little more sitting, but the programme is deliberately simple and not too discursive.
It is not designed to be an arduous experience, but a gentle stretching of our ability to be attentive, to go beyond the usual limits of our everyday sitting. We may find ourselves discovering a little bit more of how we feel and think, perhaps some boredom- always useful- and maybe even a little more groundedness and clarity.
It is also a great opportunity to meet fellow practitioners- what we call our 'sangha', and share that sense of community for a period.
